Book Review: End of Secrets by Ryan Quinn – Have you figured it out yet?

endofsecretsI teach Sunday School for Pre-schoolers twice a month in my local church. I love the ages of 3 and 4 because the kids are always full of questions and I can tell they are beginning to figure things out for themselves.

I always make sure at the beginning of class to lay out a number of puzzles for them. Some easy while others a little harder. The kids tend to gravitate towards them when they first enter the classroom. Sometimes we’ll spend the entire play time allotted before their lesson just putting together different puzzles.

It’s probably no surprise that when it comes to reading, I always have a few mysteries and thrillers in my stash. I love watching movies and reading books that allow me an opportunity to try and figure out a mystery. Who is the murderer? What is causing the disappearances? What is the secret that conspirists are whispering about on the streets? After all, who doesn’t love a good puzzle?

Amazon recently suggested that I read End of Secrets by Ryan Quinn. It’s a mystery novel, so I decided to give it a try.

Synopsis

End of Secrets follows CIA operative Kera Mersal as she quits her job to work in the private sector for a company called Hawkeye that is being contracted by the U.S. government. Her job: undercover cyber security surveillance. Her cover: An international online journalist for The Global Report.

One day, Kera is sent an email from an ex-employee of the ONE Coporation, an entertainment company that has recently been buying up financial companies. He says that he understands the reasoning behind ONE’s recent acquisitions. Kera takes the interview on her boss’ insistence, but really doesn’t think more of it since it’s outside of her undercover work.

Then a musician disappears after staging several suicide scenes in her New York apartment. Suddenly more musicians, actors and other artists have also disappeared – all leaving behind stages suicide or accident scenes and the message: Have you figured it out yet?

Kera’s boss is now more interested in the entertainers’ disappearances than the cyber security that she has been working on and she is reassigned. But this investigation will cost Kera everything as she uncovers layer after layer of conspiracies, secrets and deceptions.

Review

This book is a little bit of a slow starter for me, but as I kept with it, it became more and more of an addiction. Each time one piece of the puzzle is placed correctly, it causes you to ask yet another question. Also, everytime the author wanted you to really pay attention, he would add the phrase “Have you figured it out yet?”

At first this phrase got on my nerves. I would say “No, I haven’t figured it out yet. Grrr.” But as I paid attention to the details that unfolded whenever this phrase was present, I can say I was figuring it out. In fact, I figured it out before Kera, the main character in the book. I did, however, enjoy the way the book ended. You’ll just have to read it, to figure out what I’m talking about.

I give this book 4 stars and recommend it to anyone who loves a good consipiracy story.

Have you ever read a book and figured out the ending before you got there? What was it.
